What Is LV8 Livestock Trough Pipework?
LV8 is a capital grant item available through the government’s Capital Grants scheme. It provides a fixed payment towards installing pipework associated with a livestock drinking trough.
The pipework carries water from an appropriate supply to a new or eligible trough. This can help provide livestock with an alternative drinking source when they are excluded from streams, ponds and other surface water.
LV8 pipework can help to:

- Protect watercourse banks from trampling and erosion

Current LV8 Payment Rate
Under the 2026 Capital Grants scheme, the payment rate for LV8 pipework is £3.31 per metre.
This is a fixed contribution towards each eligible metre and may not cover the full cost of materials, excavation, installation, fittings, crossing protection and ground reinstatement.

Suitable Locations
Where Can LV8 Be Used?
LV8 can be used:
- In areas targeted for reducing water pollution caused by farming where livestock are excluded from streams or surface water
- Where a new trough is needed to meet the grazing requirements of an eligible creation or management action
LV8 cannot be used to replace existing pipework or equipment in the same location, under livestock housing or roofed structures, within 10 metres of a watercourse, on areas vulnerable to soil erosion identified in the Farm Environment Record, or within six metres of a historic or archaeological feature identified in the Historic Environment Farm Environment Record.
The proposed route, location and eligibility should be confirmed before work begins.

LV8 Pipework Requirements
LV8 pipework must meet the specification set out in the agreement and current government guidance.
The requirements include:
- Using medium-density blue polyethylene pipework
- Using pipe with an external diameter of at least 25 millimetres
- Ensuring all joints are watertight
- Using suitable brass or plastic joints
- Burying the pipe below cultivation depth
- Installing the pipe at least 600 millimetres below ground level, or at the depth required by the local water supplier
- Protecting the pipe with a tubular steel guard or sleeve if it crosses an open ditch
- Installing the pipe 600 millimetres below a ditch to allow for future ditch cleaning
- Providing additional protection where the pipe crosses a farm track
The exact materials, route and installation method should be checked against the current LV8 specification before work begins.
Protected Crossings
Installing LV8 Pipework Across Farm Tracks
Additional protection is required where LV8 pipework crosses a farm track.
The pipe must be laid on a bed of sand at least 75 millimetres deep, covered with a further 100 millimetres of sand and overlaid with suitable backfill.
This helps protect the water pipe from vehicle movements, machinery and pressure from the track surface.
Any track crossing should be carefully planned to provide adequate protection while maintaining the required pipe depth.
Protected Crossings
Installing LV8 Pipework Across Open Ditches
Where the approved pipe route crosses an open ditch, the pipe must be protected with a tubular steel guard or sleeve pipe.
The pipe must be positioned at least 600 millimetres beneath the ditch so that future cleaning and maintenance can be carried out without damaging it.
The crossing should be carefully installed and recorded as part of the project evidence.

Using LV8 with LV3 and LV7
LV8 covers the pipework supplying water to a livestock drinking point. Other grant items may be required to complete the installation.

Important Capital Grant Information
Applications for LV8 funding are made through the Rural Payments service. The applicant or agreement holder is responsible for:
- Confirming that the land, route and proposed work are eligible
- Applying for the appropriate capital grant items
- Obtaining any necessary permissions or consents
- Following the specification contained in the agreement
- Confirming any depth requirements with the local water supplier
- Keeping photographs from the different installation stages
- Retaining the required invoices and financial records
- Submitting the completed claim to the Rural Payments Agency

The Rural Payments Agency requires photographs from different stages of the installation, or other documents confirming that the technical specification has been met. Photographs should be taken before trenches are backfilled so the pipework, joints, depths and protective measures can be evidenced.
