What Is FG3 Permanent Electric Fencing?
FG3 is a capital grant item available through the government’s Capital Grants scheme. It provides a fixed payment towards the cost of installing permanent, mains-powered electric fencing.
Unlike temporary or portable electric fencing, FG3 is intended to create a permanent livestock-control system. It uses posts, suitable insulators and a minimum of four plain electric wires connected to a mains-operated energiser.
FG3 electric fencing can be used for eligible purposes such as:
- Controlling livestock as part of habitat management, restoration or creation
- Protecting newly planted trees and other environmental features
- Protecting buffer strips and field corners taken out of management
- Separating livestock from watercourses or sensitive areas
- Helping to prevent water pollution caused by farming
- Supporting managed grazing on grassland
- Supporting agreed agroforestry projects
If you require a conventional non-electric post and wire fence, the appropriate item may instead be FG1 Fencing.
If the fence must also prevent rabbit access, the FG4 Rabbit Fencing Supplement may be used alongside FG3 where the project is eligible.

Current FG3 Payment Rate
Under the 2026 Capital Grants scheme, the payment rate for FG3 permanent electric fencing is £5.66 per metre.
This is a fixed contribution towards eligible work and may not cover the full cost of materials, preparation, installation or the electricity supply required for the fencing system.

The final amount will depend on the eligible length included in your agreement and successfully completed in accordance with the scheme requirements.
Grant Specification
FG3 Electric Fencing Requirements
FG3 permanent electric fencing must meet the specification set out in the agreement and current government guidance.
The requirements include:
- Installing a mains-operated energiser in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
- Installing the wire fencing to a minimum height of 1.05 metres
- Using at least four mild-steel or high-tensile plain wires
- Attaching the wires to the posts using suitable insulators
- Installing appropriate straining posts at fence ends and changes of direction
- Providing suitable struts, bracing and support
- Using intermediate posts of the required size and length
- Keeping the fence separate from trees and hedgerows
- Ensuring the fence does not block or restrict access to open-access land
Wooden or metal posts may be used, provided they comply with the relevant requirements. Additional agreement may be necessary if metal posts are being installed on land within a Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier agreement.
The energiser must be mains operated. A temporary, portable or battery-powered electric fencing system would not meet the standard FG3 specification.

Important Capital Grant Information
Applications for FG3 funding are made through the Rural Payments service. The applicant or agreement holder is responsible for:
- Confirming that the land and proposed work are eligible
- Applying for the appropriate grant item
- Obtaining any necessary permissions or consents
- Following the specification contained in the agreement
- Arranging an appropriate mains electricity supply
- Keeping the required evidence and financial records
- Submitting the completed claim to the Rural Payments Agency

FG3 funding cannot normally be used where grant support has already been provided for fencing at the same location within the previous seven years.
