FG1 Fencing
What Is FG1 Fencing?
FG1 is a capital grant item available through the government’s Capital Grants scheme. It provides a fixed payment towards the cost of installing permanent steel-wire fencing.
The fencing must be used for an eligible environmental or land-management purpose. This can include:
- Controlling livestock as part of habitat management, restoration or creation
- Protecting newly planted trees and other environmental features
- Protecting buffer strips and field corners taken out of management
- Separating livestock from watercourses or sensitive areas
- Helping to prevent water pollution caused by farming
- Supporting agreed woodland or agroforestry projects
FG1 is generally a post and wire fencing option. If steel wire mesh is required to contain sheep, the relevant grant item may instead be FG2 Sheep Netting.
Rabbit-proofing is covered separately by the FG4 Rabbit Fencing Supplement, which must be used alongside an eligible main fencing item.

Current FG1 Payment Rate
Under the 2026 Capital Grants scheme, the payment rate for FG1 fencing is £6.34 per metre.
This is a fixed contribution towards eligible work and may not cover the full cost of materials, preparation and installation.

Grant Specification
FG1 Fencing Requirements
FG1 fencing must meet the specification set out in the agreement and current government guidance.
Depending on whether wooden or metal posts are used, the requirements cover areas such as:
- Removing old fencing material before installing the new fence
- Installing the steel-wire fence to a minimum height of 1.05 metres
- Using suitable galvanised plain, high-tensile or barbed wire
- Installing appropriate straining posts at fence ends and changes of direction
- Providing suitable bracing and support
- Using intermediate posts of the required size, length and spacing
- Keeping the fence separate from trees and hedgerows
- Ensuring the fence does not block or restrict access to open-access land

Important Capital Grant Information
Applications for FG1 funding are made through the Rural Payments service. The applicant or agreement holder is responsible for:
- Confirming that the land and proposed work are eligible
- Applying for the appropriate grant item
- Obtaining any necessary permissions or consents
- Following the specification contained in the agreement
- Keeping the required evidence and financial records
- Submitting the completed claim to the Rural Payments Agency
MES Rural provides fencing quotations and installation services. We can also supply supporting photographs and invoices relating to our work. However, we cannot confirm eligibility or guarantee that an application or claim will be approved.
A new fence cannot normally receive FG1 funding if grant support has already been provided for fencing at the same location within the previous seven years.
