What Is an LV7 Livestock Trough?
LV7 is a capital grant item available through the government’s Capital Grants scheme. It provides a fixed payment towards the installation of a new livestock drinking trough.
The item is intended to provide livestock with a reliable alternative to drinking directly from streams, ponds and other surface water.
An appropriately positioned livestock trough can help to:
- Reduce livestock access to streams and ponds
- Protect watercourse banks from trampling and erosion
- Reduce sediment entering nearby water
- Limit faecal contamination of watercourses
- Support better livestock and grazing management
- Provide a more reliable source of drinking water
- Support the introduction of grazing under an eligible management action
- Improve water quality across agricultural land
LV7 covers the eligible trough. Separate grant items may be available for the surrounding hard-standing and associated water-supply pipework.

Current LV7 Payment Rate
Under the 2026 Capital Grants scheme, the payment rate for LV7 livestock troughs is £152.92 per trough.
This is a fixed contribution towards each eligible trough and may not cover the full cost of purchasing, delivering, positioning and connecting it to a water supply.

The final amount will depend on the number of eligible troughs included in your agreement and successfully installed in accordance with the scheme requirements.
Suitable Locations
Where Can LV7 Be Used?
LV7 can be used:
- In areas targeted for reducing water pollution caused by farming where livestock are excluded from streams or surface water
- Where grazing is being introduced as part of an eligible management or creation action
The trough should be positioned on hard-standing or well-drained soil to reduce poaching, erosion and runoff. It should also be located away from flow pathways and other features through which sediment or manure could enter a watercourse.
LV7 cannot be used under livestock housing or roofed structures, within 10 metres of a ditch, stream or waterway, on areas vulnerable to soil erosion identified in the Farm Environment Record, to replace an existing livestock trough, or within six metres of a historic or archaeological feature identified in the Historic Environment Farm Environment Record.
The proposed location and eligibility should be confirmed before work begins.

LV7 Livestock Trough Requirements
An LV7 livestock trough must meet the specification set out in the agreement and current government guidance.
The requirements include:
- Using a trough made from an eligible material
- Connecting the trough to a suitable water supply or regularly supplying it from a bowser
- Installing a ball valve and service box
- Ensuring the trough complies with British Standard BS 3445
- Complying with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 when using a mains water supply
Eligible trough materials include galvanised steel, concrete, spray-moulded glass-reinforced cement and polyethylene.
The trough should be suitable for the number and type of livestock expected to use it. It should also be positioned and installed so that overflow or leaks do not cause ponding, erosion or contaminated runoff.
The exact materials and installation method should be checked against the current LV7 specification before work begins.

LV7 covers the eligible livestock trough. Other grant items may be required to create the complete drinking point.

Applications for LV7 funding are made through the Rural Payments service. The applicant or agreement holder is responsible for:

- Following the specification contained in the agreement
- Ensuring the installation complies with applicable water regulations
- Keeping the required photographs and financial records
- Submitting the completed claim to the Rural Payments Agency
