What Is FG2 Sheep Netting?
FG2 is a capital grant item available through the government’s Capital Grants scheme. It provides a fixed payment towards the cost of installing permanent steel wire mesh fencing.
Unlike standard post and wire fencing, sheep netting uses wire mesh to create a more secure livestock boundary. It is particularly suitable where sheep or smaller livestock need to be kept away from habitats, watercourses, trees or other environmental features.
FG2 sheep netting can be used for eligible purposes such as:
- Controlling sheep as part of habitat management, restoration or creation
- Protecting newly planted trees and other environmental features
- Protecting buffer strips and field corners taken out of management
- Separating livestock from watercourses or sensitive areas
- Helping to prevent water pollution caused by farming
- Supporting agreed woodland or agroforestry projects
- Creating secure boundaries for managed grazing
For a standard steel-wire fence without mesh, the relevant grant item may instead be FG1 Fencing.
If additional rabbit protection is required, the FG4 Rabbit Fencing Supplement may be used alongside FG2 where the project is eligible.

Current FG2 Payment Rate
Under the 2026 Capital Grants scheme, the payment rate for FG2 sheep netting is £7.47 per metre.
This is a fixed contribution towards eligible work and may not cover the full cost of materials, preparation and installation.

The final amount will depend on the eligible length included in your agreement and successfully completed in accordance with the scheme requirements.

FG2 Sheep Netting Requirements
FG2 sheep netting must meet the specification set out in the agreement and current government guidance.
Depending on whether wooden or metal posts are used, the requirements cover areas such as:
- Removing old fencing material before installing the new fence
- Installing steel wire mesh fencing to a minimum height of 1.05 metres
- Using suitable additional galvanised wire where extra height is required
- Installing appropriate straining posts at fence ends and changes of direction
- Providing suitable bracing and support
- Using intermediate posts of the required size, length and spacing
- Keeping the fencing separate from trees and hedgerows
- Ensuring the fence does not block or restrict access to open-access land
- Installing the wire so it can move, contract and expand with temperature changes
Metal posts can be used where they are suitable for the site and meet the required durability standards. Additional agreement may be necessary if metal posts are being installed on land within a Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier agreement.
The exact materials and construction method should be checked against the current FG2 specification before work begins.

Before You Apply
Important Capital Grant Information
Applications for FG2 funding are made through the Rural Payments service. The applicant or agreement holder is responsible for:
- Confirming that the land and proposed work are eligible
- Applying for the appropriate grant item
- Obtaining any necessary permissions or consents
- Following the specification contained in the agreement
- Keeping the required evidence and financial records
- Submitting the completed claim to the Rural Payments Agency
MES Rural provides fencing quotations and installation services. We can also supply supporting photographs and invoices relating to our work. However, we cannot confirm eligibility or guarantee that an application or claim will be approved.
FG2 funding cannot normally be used where grant support has already been provided for fencing at the same location within the previous seven years. It also cannot normally be used to protect established woodland from livestock unless this has been agreed with a Forestry Commission adviser.
